Urbia's story, however, isn’t just about furniture; it’s about family, legacy and the values passed down through generations. Our journey begins nearly a century ago with a humble dry goods store opened in pre-World War II Philadelphia by Hungarian immigrants seeking new opportunities. This store marked the Gevurtz family’s first step into the furniture industry, laying the foundation for a long-standing tradition of hard work and creative spirit.

In 1982, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, our founder Gary Gevurtz opened Somnia, a boutique sleep shop. Gary’s talent for curating sophisticated, high-end leather furniture soon transformed Somnia from a niche store into a respected well-rounded name in the world of home furnishings. And by 2007, Gary’s vision expanded even further with the creation of Dwelling—a high-end specialty store known for its distinctive, hand-selected home décor that inspired customers and designers alike.
As Dwelling thrived, so did Gary’s interest in directly sourcing unique, globally inspired furniture. And so, Urbia was born—bridging the gap between artistic design with accessible luxury and function, and an emphasis on providing customers with high-fashion furniture that remains approachable and meaningful.

In 2013, the family legacy continued when David Gevurtz, Urbia’s President and Co-Owner, brought his own fresh perspective to the business. While his early career was rooted in real estate and hospitality, David’s interest quickly blossomed when he joined his father on a sourcing trip to Vietnam. What began as a culinary exploration for a Vietnamese restaurant concept soon evolved into a deep admiration for furniture and design, leading David to embrace the family legacy and bring new energy to Urbia.

Together, Gary and David have merged their talents and experiences—Gary’s deep-rooted industry knowledge and David’s outside-the-box thinking—to create a brand that’s not only inspired by the past but is always looking towards the future. Today, Urbia continues to evolve and offer exceptional service and innovative designs that reflect the diverse tastes and lifestyles of our customers.
